A photo on Plus Size Modeling’s Facebook page shows a heavy image of Barbie and asks visitors to like the image if they think a plus sized version of the iconic doll should be available. The post generated numerous comments, as you’d expect:
“Leave the original doll alone!”
“Can’t they just make a NORMAL body Barbie?”
“About time….there should be different size models”
One commenter, noting the plus sized prototype has a triple chin, said “Drop the chin[s]. Big, curvy women are not fat!” Others think neither a skinny nor plus sized doll is the answer, suggesting instead a toy that fits the happy, average median. That, of course, raises a debate about just what constitutes average or ideal weight for women.
Tell us what you think: would a plus sized version of Barbie be helpful in creating realistic expectations around body image for young girls? Comment and let us know.
