The FDA just added a new tool to the safe sex toolbox! Twirla® is a weekly contraceptive patch that can be worn on the abdoman, buttocks, or upper torso. The transdermal patch is a hormonal contraceptive option with a similar makeup to oral contraceptives. It delivers a estrogen, 30 mcg daily dose of ethinyl estradiol, as well as a progestin, 120 mcg daily dose of levonorgestrel. If you think that Twirla® might be a good choice for you, talk to your health care provider.
There are a lot of contraceptive options on the market and it can be overwhelming to figure out which one is the best for you. ASHA has a number of resources on contraceptive options, LARCs, condoms, and taking control of your reproductive health!
